The Climate Resilient Infrastructure Mainstreaming Project (CRIMP) of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) organised a two-day training workshop on preparation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Action Plans in Dhaka on 5–6 July 2026, bringing together engineers, consultants and contractors at LGED headquarters, said in a press release.
The workshop was held at the Seminar Hall on the 12th Floor of the RDED Building at LGED Headquarters, and focused on strengthening occupational safety planning for infrastructure works under climate-resilient development programmes across Bangladesh, according to the statement.
The programme was inaugurated by Md Azharul Islam, Additional Chief Engineer of LGED and Director of the Climate Resilient Local Infrastructure Centre (CReLIC). Md Saifuddin, Superintending Engineer of the Human Resources, Environment and Gender Division at LGED, attended as special guest. The background, objectives and significance of the training were presented by Md Abdul Khaleque, Project Director of CRIMP.
Technical sessions were conducted by Sebastien Frionnet, Consultant of KfW, who served as lead resource person. Sheikh Touhidur Rahman, Urban Portfolio Coordinator of KfW, was also present during the event.
Frionnet outlined core principles of Occupational Health and Safety, including hazard identification, risk assessment, hierarchy of controls, emergency preparedness, awareness building and capacity development. He also discussed the formulation of key performance indicators for monitoring and evaluation of OHS systems. The workshop included practical exercises, participant presentations and interactive feedback sessions designed to translate theoretical concepts into workplace application.
The training brought together Executive Engineers, Senior Assistant Engineers and Assistant Engineers from Bhola, Barguna and Satkhira districts, along with the Executive Engineer of Satkhira Pourashava. Specialists from the DSM Consulting Firm, representatives from contracting companies and personnel working under various development projects also participated. Engineers from both CRIMP and CReLIC were included among the attendees.
Speaking at the closing session, Md Azharul Islam said LGED plays a critical role in infrastructure development from local to national levels, with field engineers routinely operating in environments where construction hazards are significant. He stressed that ensuring the safety of engineers and workers is not optional but a professional and moral responsibility.
He added that the knowledge gained from the training should not remain limited to documentation, urging participants to implement the draft Occupational Health and Safety Action Plans developed during the workshop in their respective projects and workplaces.
Among others present were Md Moksed Alam, Deputy Team Leader of DSM Consulting Firm, Banda Hafiz, Training Specialist, and Syed Mahabub Ahsan, Media and Communication Specialist.
The initiative reflects LGED’s broader push to integrate occupational safety frameworks into climate-resilient infrastructure delivery, strengthening compliance and field-level risk management practices across ongoing development programmes, the statement said.
