Mymensingh-7 lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman on Thursday said the Awami League was unlikely to return to power within the next 50 years, arguing that the party had alienated three generations through its actions during recent political movements.
Speaking during the general discussion on the proposed national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in parliament, Mahbubur said the experiences of students and young people during major political movements would continue to shape public attitudes towards the party for decades. The sitting was presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad.
“The possibility of the Awami League returning in the next 50 years is very slim while these three generations are alive,” he told the House.
The MP said the Awami League had “injured” three generations—those now studying in schools, colleges and universities—and claimed that their collective experiences had created a long-term political barrier to the party’s return to power.
According to Mahbubur, the political outlook of these generations was shaped by their participation in the Safe Road movement, the quota reform movement and the subsequent “Hasina Khedao” movement.
He said young people had witnessed the Awami League’s rule first-hand during those movements and argued that those experiences would not be easily forgotten, making the party’s political comeback highly unlikely in the foreseeable future.
