The remaining part of ‘Mritunjoyee Prangan’ which featured a mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bijoy Sarani in the capital has been removed.
The Dhaka North City Corporation began to dismantle the remaining part of the remaining structures early Friday, DNCC sources said.
Visiting the site, it was seen that the entire “Mritunjoyee Prangan” premises had been enclosed with cloth for convenience of the work.
An excavator was being used pulled down the remaining part. Construction workers were seen removing tiles and doing other tasks.
Except for construction workers, no officials from the city corporation or any other agencies were present there.
A construction worker told Times of Bangladesh, “Work started at 2:00am. We joined in the afternoon.”
Attempts were made to contact the administrator and other officials of DNCC for comments, but no one responded.
An official, requesting anonymity, told Times of Bangladesh, “. In a board meeting of the city corporation, it was discussed that a new mural related to the July Uprising would be built here.”
“It will be named as Gono Minar in memory of the martyrs of the July-August uprising. We aim to complete it before August 5 this year.”
Protestors tore down the ‘Mritunjoyee Mujib’ mural on August 5, the day the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ousted through a student-led mass uprising.
Hasina inaugurated the ‘Mritunjoyee Mujib’ mural on November 10 in 2023.
