Presidency University (PU) inaugurated its two-day Seasonal Fruit Festival on Thursday, aiming to promote awareness of the nutritional value of local fruits and strengthen students’ connection with Bangladesh’s cultural heritage, the university said in a press release.
The festival opened at 11am on the university campus, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Abdul Mannan Chowdhury formally launching the event. Said in a press release, the occasion featured a vibrant display of seasonal fruits including mangoes, litchis, jackfruits, blackberries and lotkon, attracting students, academic staff, non-academic staff and distinguished guests.
Professor Anwarul Kabir, principal adviser of the university, attended as special guest. Other attendees included Md Sakir Hossain, registrar; Professor Shahidul Islam Khan Nayeem, dean of the School of Engineering; Professor Abul Kalam, dean of the School of Business; Professor Mohammad Azharul Islam, dean of the School of Law; Md Zahedur Rahman, controller of examinations; Md Anisur Rahman, proctor; and chairpersons and heads of various departments.
Md Afroza Helen, director of student affairs and administration, and Musfiqur Rahman Dhruba, deputy director and head of strategic operations and student affairs, orchestrated the event, while Jahid Hasan, deputy director and head of public relations, managed media and public outreach.
Speakers at the inaugural ceremony highlighted the health benefits and cultural significance of domestic fruits. They praised the initiative for promoting local consumption and emphasised the role of such programs in connecting younger generations with Bangladesh’s traditions, culture and heritage, the statement added.
The festival continues Friday, allowing participants to explore seasonal produce, engage with university-led educational activities and deepen awareness of nutritional and cultural values inherent in indigenous fruits.
