Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for accelerated global climate initiatives, describing the increasing impacts of climate change as a “harsh reality” for the world’s population.
In a message issued on the eve of World Environment Day 2026, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “Climate Action,” as declared by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
He noted that the climate crisis remains one of the greatest global challenges, with sea-level rise, heatwaves, irregular rainfall, cyclones, flash floods, and biodiversity loss profoundly affecting the environment, economy, and human lives.
Vulnerability and policy framework
The Prime Minister underscored that although Bangladesh’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions is negligible, the country remains one of the most vulnerable in the world due to its geographical location and high population density.
According to the Climate Risk Index 2026, Bangladesh faces significant risks from increasing salinity, declining agricultural productivity, and climate-induced displacement.
To address these challenges, the government is pursuing an integrated policy framework through the implementation of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
Priority is being given to coastal protection, social forestry, disaster preparedness, the rehabilitation of climate-displaced people, and nature-based solutions.
Key environmental initiatives
A centrepiece of the government’s environmental agenda is a massive programme to plant 250 million trees over the next five years to protect biodiversity and enhance climate resilience.
The government has commenced the excavation and re-excavation of 20,000 kilometres of canals across the country.
Prime Minister Rahman emphasised the necessity of modernising agriculture to be more climate-resilient through research, innovation, and training.
He also noted that efforts are being intensified to expand renewable energy, promote green industrialisation, and develop eco-friendly urbanisation and waste management systems.
Global carbon markets
The government is also taking effective steps to tap into the potential of carbon credits and the global carbon market.
Concluding his message, the Prime Minister expressed his firm conviction that a green, safe, and habitable Bangladesh can be achieved through coordinated efforts and responsible environmental behaviour.
He wished for the total success of all programmes organised to mark World Environment Day 2026.
