Former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Selina Hayat Ivy has been released from prison on bail.
She was released from Kashimpur Central Women’s Jail around 10pm on Wednesday. The matter was confirmed by Prisons Directorate AIG (Media) Md Jannat-ul Farhad.
Ivy currently faces 12 ongoing cases across various police stations in Narayanganj. Following the court’s decision to grant her bail, she was released once the legal documents reached the prison and underwent verification.
Her appointed lawyer, Awad Hossain, other legal representatives, and relatives were present at the time of her release.
Previously, Ivy was arrested by police from her residence in Deobhog, Narayanganj, in the early hours of 9 May last year. She was shown arrested in 12 cases involving charges of murder, attempted murder, and the Explosives Act in connection with the anti-discrimination student-people movement.
Regarding her legal proceedings, the High Court granted Ivy interim bail on 30 April in two cases filed with Siddhirganj Police Station.
Although the State sought a stay on this bail, the Chamber Judge’s Court of the Appellate Division, led by Justice Md Rezaul Haque, issued a ‘No Order’ on the State’s petition on 17 May.
Additionally, on May 10, the Appellate Division upheld the High Court’s bail order for Ivy in 10 separate cases, including murder charges, related to the anti-discrimination movement.
Selina Hayat Ivy served as the mayor of Narayanganj Municipality from 2003 to 2011. She subsequently won three consecutive elections as the mayor of the newly formed Narayanganj City Corporation.
