Mohammadpur police have arrested two individuals and recovered stolen goods in connection with a robbery in the capital. The arrestees have been identified as Md Jewel, alias Arif, 45, and Anwar Hossain, 28.
According to police, Anwar was apprehended from Bandar area of Narayanganj around 7:45pm on Tuesday. On the same day, Jewel was arrested in the same locality with the assistance of RAB-11.
The robbery occurred on 31 May around 3:40am when two women, arriving from their home village in Thakurgaon, reached the front of house in Nurjahan Road, Mohammadpur. Three unidentified assailants in a pickup truck intercepted them, brandishing sharp machetes (chapattis) and threatening them.
The assailants fled the scene after forcibly taking a mobile phone, 1.5 bhoris of gold ornaments, along with Tk55,000 in cash, clothing, and cosmetics. Following the victims’ complaint, a regular case was registered at Mohammadpur Police Station on 1 June.
After the case was filed, police identified the suspects’ locations using CCTV footage and information technology.
Following his arrest, Anwar led police on raids that resulted in the seizure of two stolen bags, essential clothing, a machete used in the crime, and the truck involved in robbery.
Police records indicate that Jewel, alias Arif, is a criminal with five cases pending against him at various police stations, including two for robbery, two under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, and one for dacoity.
During primary interrogation, the suspects confessed to being part of a gang that conducts group robberies across various areas of Dhaka, including Mohammadpur. They further admitted to selling stolen goods in different parts of the country. Legal proceedings against the arrested individuals are currently underway.
