Fazlur Rahman, the Member of Parliament for the Kishoreganj-4 (Itna-Mithamoin-Austagram) constituency, has stated that economic honesty was the most significant virtue in the life of Ziaur Rahman.
He made these remarks as the chief guest during a prayer meeting and discussion session held on Saturday afternoon at the Itna Upazila headquarters.
The event was organised by the Itna Upazila BNP and its affiliate organisations to commemorate the 45th death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman.
Addressing the gathering, Fazlur Rahman noted that Ziaur Rahman’s second greatest quality was his administrative efficiency, while his third was his foresight. He observed, however, that Zia’s “excessive trust in people” was a weakness. “It was due to this trust in people that he used to move around with minimal security,” the MP added.
Reflecting on the Liberation War, Fazlur Rahman said that Ziaur Rahman demonstrated immense courage by proclaiming independence during a time of crisis. He described that proclamation as a risky and significant event in history.
He further highlighted that, despite being a military officer, Ziaur Rahman took the initiative to establish multi-party democracy. He created opportunities for political parties and electoral politics, replacing the then one-party system.
During the session, the MP recalled the contributions of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and expressed his expectations for the development and reconstruction of the country under the leadership of the current acting chairman, Tarique Rahman.
The programme was presided over by S M Kamal Hossain, President of Itna Upazila BNP. Special guests in attendance included Umme Kulsum Rekha, former Vice-President of District BNP; Aminul Islam Ratan, General Secretary of the District Bar Association; Md. Monir Uddin, Senior Vice-President of Upazila BNP; Palash Rahman, Senior Joint General Secretary; and Tarikul Islam Jewel, Organising Secretary. The event was moderated by Siddiquzzaman Thakur Swapan, General Secretary of Upazila BNP.
