A driver, Md Opu, has been detained for impersonating “Major General Mohammad Morshed” to influence law enforcement and legal proceedings. He reportedly used the fake identity to direct police investigations, seek remand orders, and request updates on bail applications to give cases special attention.
Initially causing confusion, Opu was placed on a three-day remand after his suspicious behaviour in court on 11 May prompted a judge to question him and order a mobile phone search. Police found a WhatsApp account named “MAJ.GEN.MOH.MORSHED”, leading to his immediate detention and a case filed under the Cyber Security Act at Kotwali Police Station by Jatrabari Court Sub-Inspector Anwar Hossain.
The FIR states Opu had filed a case at Jatrabari Police Station and, to ensure swift action, contacted the officer-in-charge and other officials while posing as a senior military officer. Police said he also presented himself as a relative of the major general and contacted DMP prosecution officials to influence proceedings.
Opu is originally from Medi Ashulai village, Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur and now resides in Mirpur 14, Dhaka. Investigators are reviewing whether he was linked to any organised group.
Records show Opu had filed cases against his first wife and seven others, alleging extramarital affairs, kidnapping, and a ransom demand of Tk10 lakh. When police initially refused to accept one case, he allegedly pressured officers using the fake military identity.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Abdul Karim said the allegations of influence were false; the real issue involved Opu taking Tk5.5 lakh from garment workers under false promises of sending them abroad and refusing to return the money. He was later detained by creditors seeking repayment.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi said, “Fraudsters should be punished. Appropriate action will be taken based on the investigating officer’s report.”
