A Mro child died with measles symptoms in Kurukpata Union of Alikadam, Bandarban, bringing the total death toll to five.
Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital confirmed the matter on Thursday.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer (UH&FPO) Mohammad Abu Hanif said, “Until 13 May, 304 children have been affected by measles symptoms in the upazila. Among them, 263 were brought to the hospital for medical services. 73 are still undergoing treatment.”
The outbreak spread through the Kurukpata and Poamuhuri areas of Alikadam at the end of April. To manage the crisis, two camp hospitals were established at Kurukpata Maitree Primary School and Poamuhuri. Currently, 410 patients are receiving treatment across these two camp hospitals.
Health workers and volunteers are navigating remote areas, visiting homes to provide primary treatment and measles vaccinations for ill children before transporting them to the hospital.
Civil Surgeon Shahin Chowdhury said, “At this moment, we are prioritising emergency medical services. Once the situation is under control, any issues regarding negligence in healthcare will be investigated.”
