Ashiqur Rahman Shibli struck 99 not out for Legends of Rupganj in the Dhaka Premier League opener on Monday but fell one run short of a century.
Shibli anchored the innings and built partnerships through controlled batting. He rotated strike, picked gaps, and avoided risk in key phases as Rupganj set their total.
He admitted the near miss but kept his focus on the campaign. “There will be regret, but I tried to stay normal. What has happened is done. Now the next match. I will think one game at a time. I do not want to look too far ahead in the tournament.”
Shibli outlined the batting plan during the innings. “Our goal was to bat as deep as possible and build big partnerships. We focused on that. We played ball by ball and looked at the total later.”
He kept his long-term aim clear while avoiding pressure. “Everyone dreams of playing for the national team. I am no different. I try. The process is in my hands, but selection is not. I am enjoying my cricket.”
Shibli also credited the quick organisation of the league. “Tamim bhai deserves thanks. We were not sure if the Dhaka League would happen. He came in and took the decision quickly.”
Matches took place across six venues in Dhaka on the opening day. Mohammedan Sporting Club, Prime Bank Cricket Club, Dhaka Leopards, Gazi Group Cricketers and Bashundhara Strikers all recorded wins, while Rupganj fell short despite Shibli’s unbeaten 99.
