Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the veteran leader of the French left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI), has officially declared his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election.
The 74-year-old politician confirmed his decision during an interview with TF1 TV on Sunday, stating, “Yes, I am a candidate”.
This announcement marks Mélenchon’s fourth attempt to secure the presidency, following previous campaigns in 2012, 2017, and 2022.
In the most recent election, he achieved his strongest result to date, capturing 22 per cent of the vote and finishing only 1.2 percentage points behind the far-right leader Marine Le Pen.
The upcoming 2027 race is widely seen as an open contest.
Current President Emmanuel Macron is barred from seeking a third term due to constitutional limits, while Marine Le Pen is currently in the midst of a legal challenge against a potential ban from political office.
Mélenchon’s LFI is the primary force within the New Popular Front, a coalition of left-wing groups that currently constitutes the third-largest bloc in France’s National Assembly.
The party has gained prominence for its staunch criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, with Mélenchon describing the actions as genocide and demanding the suspension of the European Union’s association agreement with Israel.
The LFI leader has also expressed support for Spain’s diplomatic position against the US-Israel conflict with Iran.
On the domestic front, LFI continues to advocate for stringent environmental regulations and the implementation of higher taxes on the wealthy.
The candidacy comes at a time of significant political instability for France. Following the 2024 elections, which resulted in a hung parliament, the country has seen several governments and prime ministers over the past two years.
President Macron’s Renaissance party has also experienced a collapse in public support amidst ongoing economic and administrative crises.
The presidential election is scheduled to take place in April 2027. If no candidate achieves an absolute majority in the first round of voting, a decisive run-off between the top two candidates will be held two weeks later.
