A total of 1,034 journalists faced various forms of repression in 523 incidents across the country between September 2024 and April 2026, according to a report by Human Rights Support Society (HRSS).

The report was released in a statement on Sunday to mark World Press Freedom Day, observed under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace: Advancing Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security”.

HRSS Executive Director Ijajul Islam stated that establishing a free press must go beyond ceremonial observances. He emphasised that ending the harassment of journalists at both national and local levels is a demand of the time to ensure the freedom of the press.

According to the HRSS data, the period spanning from the tenure of the interim government to the 13th National Parliamentary Election saw 862 journalists attacked in 434 separate incidents. During this time, six journalists were killed, 402 were injured, and 94 were assaulted.

Furthermore, 105 journalists faced various threats, while 222 individuals were accused in 49 cases, resulting in 33 arrests.

The situation has persisted under the current administration following the 13th National Parliamentary Election. The report highlights that 172 journalists have been victims of repression in 89 incidents during this period. This includes 102 injuries, 23 instances of assault, and 27 cases of threats.

Additionally, 13 journalists have been accused in six cases, with five currently detained.

The HRSS expressed “grave concern” over Bangladesh’s current standing in the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index, where the country is ranked 152nd out of 180 nations.

The rights organisation underscored that ensuring financial security, an independent working environment, and legal protection for media workers is essential for objective journalism and the establishment of a free press.

In its statement, the HRSS called upon the government to implement a specific pay scale and a dedicated protection framework for journalists. It also urged independent media outlets to play a more vigilant role in countering disinformation in the digital age.
