Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda was arrested from the Uttara area of the capital on Sunday.

The arrest came a few hours after BNP filed a case against 24 persons, including three former chief election commissioners, on charges of manipulation in the last three national elections.

An angry mob made him wear a garland of shoes and paraded him around the street before the police intervened.

Police arrived at the scene after receiving the news and rescued him.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uttara West Police Station, Hafizur Rahman, confirmed the incident.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Uttara Division Md Mohidul Islam told Times of Bangladesh that the former CEC was taken into custody for his own safety and next action will be taken based on the legal case filed.

Police said that the BNP filed a case against three former Chief Election Commissioners—Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, AKM Nurul Huda and Kazi Habibul Awal—who oversaw the 10th, 11th, and 12th parliamentary elections.

The case was filed on Sunday morning at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station by BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed.

The former chief election commissioner was taken from Uttara West Police Station to the Detective Police (DB) office on Minto Road later at night.
