The family of Sobhan Khan, a migrant worker from Madaripur who died in an accident in Saudi Arabia, has appealed for government support to bring his body home.
Sobhan Khan, son of Yusuf Khan from West Maijpara area of Dasar Upazila, had been supporting his family of five children by driving a van. In search of a better life, he went to Saudi Arabia on 19 November 2025 after borrowing around Tk5 lakh.
However, he failed to find work for the first few months and fell into further debt. About two months ago, he joined a construction company. While working there, he fell from the top of a multi-storey building and suffered serious injuries. He died on Saturday, 11 August, while undergoing treatment.
His death has left the family devastated and cast a pall of grief over the locality.
Sobhan’s wife, Mariam Akter, now faces hardship with their children. She said they had sent him abroad with loans in the hope of a better future, but he could not send any money.
“Now I do not know how I will survive with six children. I also do not know how to bring back his body,” she said.
His daughters, Mim Khan and Nur Nahar, said their father was the sole breadwinner of the family. “We want to see our father’s body returned home,” they said.
Locals have also called for government support to repatriate the body and help the family cope with the debt.
Madaripur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Wadia Shabab said steps would be taken in consultation with the relevant authorities to bring back the body and assist the family.
Family members and residents demanded swift action from the authorities to repatriate Sobhan Khan’s body and support the bereaved family.
