Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain announced that inspections of private hospitals and diagnostic centres will begin across Dhaka and gradually nationwide from Tuesday to ensure patient safety and accountability.
The announcement came after he ordered the immediate closure of Doctors Care Hospital and Diagnostic in Shyamoli, following allegations of malpractice and irregularities.
The minister conducted a surprise inspection on Monday afternoon, two days after Eid, speaking with patients and their relatives who raised complaints against the hospital.
After observing the situation, the minister described the facility as being run by a “fraudulent network” and instructed authorities to seal it immediately in the public interest.
All patients under treatment were safely transferred to other medical facilities. Two were moved to Pangu Hospital, two children to the Children’s Hospital, two patients to Suhrawardy Hospital, and another diabetes patient was sent to Popular Hospital at the family’s request.
The minister also announced that from Tuesday onwards, inspections will be conducted across private clinics, hospitals, and diagnostic centers in Shyamoli and Asadgate, before extending nationwide.
Facilities found violating regulations will be given a short window to correct deficiencies; those that fail will face closure to protect public welfare.
The directive follows a report by private television channel, which revealed that unqualified personnel, including brokers posing as orthopedic surgeons, were performing surgeries at the hospital.
Some were connected to government hospitals or medical chambers, raising serious concerns about patient safety.
