Dhaka South City Corporation launched a special cleanliness and mosquito eradication drive in Dhalpur on Saturday as part of a nationwide initiative to prevent dengue.
Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam inaugurated the programme, which is being implemented following weekly directives issued by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Weekly special operations are being carried out in every ward alongside an ongoing month-long crash programme, he said, adding that there will be no compromise on maintaining cleanliness and improving street lighting in the public interest.
He warned illegal occupiers that canal land would be recovered at any cost to remove waterlogging and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
Around 200 cleaners took part in the operation in Dhalpur, removing waste from drains and pavements and spraying insecticides in the area.
An awareness rally was also organised to inform residents about dengue prevention and sanitation.
Following the drive, the administrator handed over several newly purchased vehicles under a project aimed at modernising DSCC equipment and introducing mechanised parking.
The new fleet includes five road rollers with an 8-tonne capacity, three tyre dozers, one low-bed trailer and 10 water bowsers, each with a capacity of 5,000 litres.
The vehicles are expected to support the “Clean City, Green City” initiative by strengthening waste management and helping reduce air pollution, he said.
On the same day, Abdus Salam also inaugurated a short-term technical training workshop for drivers and mechanics organised by the DSCC Mechanical Circle.
Skilled drivers will be able to address minor mechanical problems quickly and help prevent major accidents, he said.
Senior officials of Dhaka South City Corporation and engineers from the Mechanical Circle attended the programme.
