Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, spokesperson of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a former adviser to the interim government, on Wednesday made public the bank statements of his own and his family members in response to corruption allegations surrounding his possible candidacy in the upcoming city corporation elections.
He disclosed the details at an emergency press conference held at the NCP office in Banglamotor at night.
Asif said he had submitted a full statement of his income and assets to the Cabinet Division when he stepped down from his post as adviser to the interim government.
“Even after that, attempts are being made to create speculation about my assets. I believe it is necessary to make my and my family’s bank accounts public so that no one can spread confusion,” he said.
He initially planned to publish only his own bank statements. However, he later decided to disclose the accounts of all family members to remove any remaining questions.
According to the documents he shared, Asif holds two bank accounts. At Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC, his total credit between 19 March 2024 and 3 March 2026 stood at Tk 85.81 lakh, while total debit amounted to Tk 76.03 lakh. The current balance is Tk 9.78 lakh.
At Sonali Bank PLC, opened on 14 December 2025, total deposits until 3 March 2026 reached Tk 10,000, with withdrawals of Tk 70, leaving a balance of Tk 9,930.
Asif said that during his 16 months as adviser, his average monthly salary was Tk 1.65 lakh. All salary and allowances were paid through his account.
He disclosed that his wife maintains one account at Prime Bank PLC. Between 1 May 2025 and 4 March 2026, total deposits amounted to Tk 515, while withdrawals stood at Tk 2. The current balance is Tk 613.
His father holds several accounts. At Janata Bank PLC, one account shows a balance of Tk 51,990. A loan account at the same bank records a loan of Tk 10 lakh, of which Tk 3.70 lakh has been repaid. The outstanding liability stands at Tk 6.29 lakh.
At Rupali Bank PLC, total deposits between 1 July 2024 and 1 March 2026 reached Tk 11.19 lakh, while withdrawals totalled Tk 21.10 lakh. The present balance is Tk 27,602.
At Agrani Bank PLC, deposits totalled Tk 8.12 lakh and withdrawals Tk 8.04 lakh during the same period, leaving Tk 66,108.
An NRBC Bank PLC business account under the name Israt Enterprise shows total deposits of Tk 4.02 lakh and withdrawals of Tk 1,106 between 1 January 2025 and 4 March 2026. The current balance stands at Tk 4.00 lakh.
Asif’s mother holds one account at Rupali Bank PLC. Between 1 July 2024 and 4 March 2026, total deposits were Tk 948 and withdrawals Tk 718. The current balance is Tk 21,154.
Asif described the allegations as politically motivated. He alleged that individuals associated with the Awami League were behind the claims. “No one raised these allegations when I stepped down as adviser. Only after the announcement of the city corporation elections did a group start this campaign with ill motives,” he said.
On 2 March, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit sent letters to banks and financial institutions seeking details of Asif’s personal accounts within three working days.
Following the fall of the Awami League government during the July mass uprising on 5 August 2024, an interim government took office on 8 August. Asif served as one of three advisers representing student leaders of the movement. He first oversaw the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Later, he took charge of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives along with the Youth and Sports Ministry.
Ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election, Asif resigned from his advisory post on 10 December 2025. He now serves as spokesperson of the NCP.
On 10 February this year, the interim government published asset statements of its advisers. The statement showed that as of 30 June 2025, Asif’s total assets stood at Tk 15.34 lakh, while his liabilities amounted to Tk 28,669.
