Dhaka South City Corporation has launched a month-long special cleanliness and crash programme to tackle the recent surge in mosquito infestation across the capital.
Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam formally inaugurated the campaign in Wards 71 and 72.
State Minister for Road Transport and Highways Division and Railways Ministry Habibur Rashid attended the event as special guest.
Inaugurating the drive, the administrator said the special programme aims to strengthen mosquito control measures across the city.
He said a four-tier monitoring system has been introduced at different levels to ensure transparency and accountability.
Abdus Salam said local imams will be engaged to raise public awareness alongside miking in affected areas.
He warned that executive magistrates will conduct mobile courts if residents fail to remove mosquito breeding grounds from their premises.
The administrator urged local Members of Parliament and political leaders to take an active role in the campaign.
Speaking at the programme, State Minister Habibur Rashid stressed the need to focus on underdeveloped and underserved areas of the city.
He assured that the government would extend full support to the city corporation in reclaiming canals from encroachment, describing them as major mosquito breeding grounds.
Around 250 workers from the corporation’s waste management and health departments joined the drive, which began at 9:00am.
They cleaned canals, drains, sewerage lines and footpaths and applied mosquito control chemicals.
A public awareness rally was also held with participation from local residents and members of BD Clean.
Dhaka South City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Md Zahirul Islam, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md Mahbubur Rahman Talukder, heads of different departments and local leaders were present.
