Dhaka University (DU) has finalised preparations to observe Shaheed Dibash (Martyrs’ Day) and International Mother Language Day on 21 February with due solemnity.
Strict security measures and entry restrictions will be enforced on campus from 7pm Friday. Residents of campus areas have been requested to return to their quarters by this time. For urgent movement, security passes and identification cards will be required.
As part of the university’s programme, the national flag will be flown at half-mast and black flags will be hoisted atop major buildings, including the vice-chancellor’s bungalow.
Following Asr prayers, special prayers (Munajat) will be offered at the Dhaka University Central Mosque (Masjidul Jamia), all hall mosques, mosques in residential areas, and other places of worship, seeking eternal peace for the souls of the language martyrs.
A silent morning procession (Probhat Ferri) will be brought out on Saturday from the Smriti Chirantan square in front of the vice-chancellor’s bungalow at 6:30am to honour the martyrs. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan will lead the procession.
The procession will move via Udayan School to the Central Shaheed Minar, where wreaths will be placed in tribute.
The pro-VC (administration), pro-VC (education), treasurer, registrar, Senate and Syndicate members, faculty deans, hall provosts and wardens, the proctor, departmental chairmen, institute directors, office heads, teachers, Ducsu leaders, students, officers, and employees will join the event.
All participants have been requested to assemble at Smriti Chirantan square by 6:15am to join the Probhat Ferri.
