Police recovered the decomposed body of a man from a locked rented house in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Ujjal Hossain, 35, a truck driver and son of Imam Hossain of Baot village in Gangni upazila of Meherpur district.

Police and local sources said he had been living on the second floor of a house owned by Asadul Islam in the Khalishakundi Bazar area for about one and a half years.

His truck helpers used to visit the house occasionally.

The landlord said he last spoke to Ujjal on 10 February when he paid Tk3,000 in rent arrears.

He had not been seen for several days.

On Tuesday afternoon, a strong smell from the room raised suspicion and the matter was reported to Daulatpur Police Station.

Police broke open the lock and recovered the body from the bed, wrapped in a quilt.

Investigators suspect he was killed about a week ago and the perpetrators fled the scene.

Daulatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman said police recovered the body after breaking the lock based on information from the landlord.

The body is being sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination, he said.
