BNP Chairman and prime minister-in waiting Tarique Rahman visited the residence of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Sunday evening.

Tarique arrived at the ameer’s home in the Bashundhara area of Dhaka at approximately 7:15pm. According to the BNP Press Wing, the visit was conducted as an act of political courtesy.

This meeting marks a historic milestone in the country’s political history, being the first time such a gesture has occurred between the leaders of the winning party and the incoming opposition prior to the swearing-in of a new government.

The BNP is set to form the government after securing a two-thirds majority in the 13th parliamentary election, while Jamaat-e-Islami is positioned to become a strong opposition party after winning a respectable number of seats.

Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, Jamaat’s assistant secretary general and head of media, told TIMES of Bangladesh that the party welcomed the BNP chairman’s request for the meeting. “We appreciated Tarique Rahman’s interest in coming to the Ameer’s house,” Zubair added.

Political analysts suggest that this initiative signals a message of political tolerance and maturity, which could be instrumental in strengthening democratic continuity. Such meetings are expected to play a significant role in determining future political strategies for the nation.
