Mohammad Nabi has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for breaking the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He has also received one demerit point.
The International Cricket Council shared the news in a press release on Thursday.
The incident happened during Afghanistan’s Group D match against South Africa in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Nabi did not follow the instructions of the umpire during the game.
The ICC said Nabi broke Article 2.4 of the Code of Conduct. This rule deals with not obeying an umpire’s instructions in an international match.
One demerit point has now been added to Nabi’s record. This is his first offence in the last 24 months.
Under ICC rules, a player will face suspension if he collects four or more demerit points in 24 months. Two suspension points mean a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever comes first.
The issue took place at the start of the 14th over of Afghanistan’s innings. Nabi had a long argument with the umpires about the wristband of South Africa bowler Lungi Ngidi. The umpires felt he did not follow their directions.
Nabi accepted the charge. He also agreed to the punishment given by David Gilbert of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. So, there was no need for a formal hearing.
The charge was made by on field umpires Jayaraman Madangopal and Sharfuddaula Ibne Shaheed. Third umpire Nitin Menon and fourth umpire K.N. Ananthapadmanavan also supported the report.
For a Level 1 offence under the ICC Code of Conduct, the minimum penalty is a warning. The maximum penalty is a fine of up to 50 percent of the match fee and one or two demerit points.
