In the case of Tk15 lakh stolen from a broken vault at IFIC Bank in Keraniganj, the bank’s night guard Md Siam has confessed to his involvement during interrogation. On Wednesday, Dhaka’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman recorded his statement. The court also set June 15 for remand hearings for his two accomplices, Al Amin Howladar and Imran Sheikh.
The accused were presented in court, where Siam voluntarily agreed to give a confessional statement, which was then recorded. The other two suspects were remanded for seven days each, with the court ordering their detention in jail until the hearing.
Police sources revealed that on June 9, an organised gang broke into the vault of IFIC Bank, located on the second floor of Isphani School & College Market in Rooppur Boarding area, and stole Tk15.2 lakh. Following the theft, a joint operation by Dhaka District South Detective Branch (DB) Police and Keraniganj Model Police Station arrested three suspects.
From Siam’s rented house, Tk7.4 lakh was recovered, while Tk2.4 lakh was seized from Al Amin’s residence and Tk5.4 lakh from Imran’s home. Police also confiscated tools used in the robbery, including a grinding machine, iron shovel, knives, and the CCTV DVR device with hard disks. A case has been filed at Keraniganj Model Police Station.
Keraniganj Model Police Station’s Acting Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Manirul Haque said the bank was closed due to Eid holidays, allowing the thieves to break in through an adjacent exhaust fan in the rear bathroom. They first cut the CCTV wires to disable surveillance before breaking into the vault and fleeing with cash.
The OC added that suspicion initially fell on night guard Siam, who initially claimed he was outside the bank during the incident and that unknown intruders committed the theft. However, inconsistencies in his statement led to further interrogation, during which he eventually admitted involvement.
