In Vadodara on Sunday, India allrounder Washington Sundar was ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series against New Zealand after suffering a rib injury during the opening match.
The 26-year-old sustained discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling in the New Zealand innings. Sundar completed five overs for 27 runs before leaving the field midway through the innings and did not return to field. Despite the injury, he later came out to bat at No 8 as India secured a four-wicket victory.
“Washington has been ruled out due to onset of discomfort in his left lower rib area,” a BCCI official told PTI.
India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill had earlier indicated the extent of the issue following the win. “Washington Sundar has a side strain and will go for a scan after the match,” Gill said during the post-match presentation.
Sundar is the third Indian player to be sidelined by injury during the series. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the ODIs last week after suffering a side strain, while Tilak Varma will miss the first three T20 internationals that follow due to a groin injury that required surgery.
The two teams will complete the ODI series with matches in Rajkot on 14 January and Indore on 18 January. Attention will then shift to a five-match T20I series, with fixtures scheduled in Nagpur on 21 January, Raipur on 23 January, Guwahati on 25 January, Visakhapatnam on 28 January and Thiruvananthapuram on 31 January. The T20Is will form part of India’s preparations for the T20 World Cup, to be held in India and Sri Lanka in February and March.
