Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Manab Zamin, Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, has said that the people of Bangladesh have great expectations from BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, which also means that he will face difficult challenges ahead.
The veteran journalist made the remark during the official “Greeting Exchange” between the newly appointed BNP chairman and journalists at Hotel Sheraton in the capital’s Banani area on Saturday.
He added, “But we must face these challenges collectively.”
Adding that Tarique Rahman has returned to Bangladesh’s political arena at a “turning point” in history, Matiqur Rahman Chowdhury said, “We have many expectations from Tarique Rahman, and hence, there are difficult challenges ahead. However, facing these challenges alone would be a repetition of past mistakes. And if we make the same mistake again, we will end up in a situation from where it will be difficult for us to return.”
Commenting on the need to free the country from extremism, he said, “The way today’s Bangladesh is falling into an existential crisis, that extremism is trying to engulf us from that crisis. To free the country from these extremisms, at this moment there is no alternative other than Tarique Rahman.”
“The Tarique Rahman I know is from 23 years ago, when I took his first ever online interview,” he revealed. “That interview was aired on Channel i that day. I see now that, after 23 years, Tarique Rahman has fundamentally changed as a person. Many do not believe this. But I have heard from close sources that he has, and I have seen those changes myself.”
