The wife of vice-presidential candidate of a Chhatra Shibir-supported panel Riazul Islam accused members of Jatiyo Chhatra Dal (JCD) of harassment at Jagannath University’s (JnU) central student union (Jnucsu) elections on Tuesday.

The police received a complaint, but Chhatra Dal has rejected the claims.

Shahriar Hossain, coordinator of the media committee for the Chhatra Dal-backed panel and joint convener of the JnU branch, said three outsiders affiliated with Jamaat were detained and handed over to the police.

“VP candidate Riazul’s wife came to release them. The harassment allegations are false. Propaganda is being spread,” Hossain added.

The incident reportedly occurred around 10:30am near the university’s main gate. The alleged victim, Mahima Akter, is a 2018–19 law student at JnU.

Eyewitnesses said Mahima was outside the campus wearing a hijab. Sources allege that several JnU branch Chhatra Dal leaders demanded she remove her niqab and mask, leading to a verbal altercation. She was later handed over to police but released shortly thereafter.

Speaking to reporters, Mahima Akter said, “I was outside the university with a relative when some Chhatra Dal leaders approached me. They asked me to remove my hijab and mask, which was a mental harassment.”

JnU Proctor, Professor Muhammad Tajammul Haque, confirmed the matter had come to his attention and that the university immediately intervened to restore order.
