The first Youth Festival Victory Day Baseball5 Championship in Naogaon blended celebration with competition and gave young athletes a meaningful platform on Saturday.
Baseball5 is a fast-paced, urban version of baseball that is played without bats or gloves. Players strike a rubber ball with a bare hand, matches are shorter, and teams are mixed-gender by design. With minimal equipment and space required, the format is well-suited to schools, festivals and community events, which made it a natural fit for the Victory Day programme.
Four teams took part in the inaugural competition, but Meghna stood apart for their clarity of purpose. They played at a higher tempo, made quicker decisions and trusted simple execution throughout the tournament.
Meghna booked their place in the final with a 5–2 semi-final win over Surma, using smarter spacing and smoother transitions. Fatema set the rhythm, forced repeated errors and punished loose defending to earn the Player of the Match award.
Padma advanced from the other semi-final after a tight 2–1 victory over Jamuna. Parvez held the shape together under pressure and ensured Padma stayed composed during key phases of the contest.
The final was one-sided from the outset. Meghna attacked early, closed down Padma’s lanes and converted defence into direct scoring chances. The 9–0 scoreline reflected sustained control rather than chaos.
Haimanti was outstanding in the final, reading the game quicker than anyone else and finishing with confidence. She was named Player of the Final for her influence at both ends of the court.
Padma finished in second place, while Jamuna claimed third place after edging past Surma. Results mattered, but the wider atmosphere mattered more.
As the chief guest, Kamruzzaman Shaheen welcomed the initiative and linked it closely to the spirit of Victory Day. He said that developing youth through sports such as baseball is vital, a message that reflected the broader aim of the tournament, which was to build habits and opportunity, not just produce a winner.
