Senior leaders of the BNP on Friday paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs’ Memorial on behalf of acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
Due to large crowds, reaching the memorial before sunset, as per protocol, was not possible, and the tribute was offered at 5:06pm.
According to a statement from the BNP Media Cell, Standing Committee members Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and Abdul Mueen Khan laid wreaths on behalf of Tarique Rahman.
Advisory Council member Amanullah Aman and former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar were also present.
Other attendees included Dhaka District BNP President Khondkar Abu Ashfaq, General Secretary Advocate Nipun Roy Chowdhury, Dewana Mohammad Salauddin, Tamizuddin, Yasin Ferdous Murad, Ayub Khan, retired Major General Fazle Elahi Akbar, and BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan.
Earlier in the afternoon, around 3:30pm, Tarique Rahman left his Gulshan residence to visit the grave of former President Ziaur Rahman at Zia Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Thousands of supporters lined the streets to greet him, and Tarique Rahman waved to the crowd from his red-and-green bus. By 4:30pm, he arrived at the burial site, first laying flowers at the grave, then participating in prayers for the late president’s soul. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members, and other senior leaders were present.
Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on Thursday after 17 years in exile. Earlier, the BNP organised a reception for him on the July 36 Expressway in Purbachal, Dhaka.
He also visited his mother, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, at Evercare Hospital before returning to his Gulshan residence.
