A seven-year-old girl was killed and three others injured when miscreants set fire to the home of BNP leader Belal Hossain in the Bhabaniganj area of Char Monsha, Lakshmipur Sadar, late Friday night.
According to family members and locals, Belal Hossain, the joint organising secretary of Bhabaniganj Union BNP, was asleep at home with his wife and children when the attackers locked the door, poured petrol, and set the house ablaze.
His daughter, Ayesha Begum Binti, 7, died in the fire, while Hossain and his other two daughters, Bithi Akter and Smriti Akter, sustained serious burns.
The injured were initially admitted to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital. Due to the severity of their injuries, two of the children were later referred to Dhaka burn unit for advanced treatment.
Ranjit Kumar Das, station officer of Lakshmipur Fire Service, said firefighters brought the blaze under control and rescued three victims along with the deceased child.
Officer-in-Charge of Lakshmipur Sadar Police Station Wahid Parvez confirmed that the police inspected the scene and launched an investigation to determine whether the attack was a planned act of sabotage.
