National Citizen Party (NCP) has lauded the Election Commission’s announcement of the parliamentary election schedule but expressed concerns about the impartiality of electoral process.
“While the government shows good intentions, shortcomings remain in ensuring a free and fair vote,” NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary said during a press conference at the party’s temporary office in Bangla Motor on Thursday.
“Our candidates and supporters are frequently harassed at the local level. Election Commission must ensure that no party gains undue advantage.”
The NCP leader emphasised that the upcoming election could mark the beginning of a new chapter for the country, but that the transparency and effectiveness of the government, EC, and law enforcement agencies must be strengthened.
He added that the party has instructed its members to follow the electoral code of conduct but warned that violations by other parties could create an uneven playing field. He urged EC to monitor compliance closely.
Patwary also raised concerns about cyberbullying targeting female candidates online. Although a monitoring cell has been proposed, he said little action has been taken so far. “We strongly urge Election Commission to take necessary measures immediately,” he said.
He concluded by noting that earlier doubts about whether the government would hold the election have been dispelled.
The NCP leader stressed that EC must address challenges surrounding both the parliamentary election and the referendum, which he described as vital for political change in the country.
