The Coast Guard has arrested an arms manufacturer in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar, along with a cache of firearms and ammunition.
The accused has been identified as Abdus Shukkur Prokash, alias Basinya, 55. He is a local resident of Maheshkhali Upazila.
Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque, media officer of the Coast Guard, said in a statement on Friday that based on a tip-off, a special operation was conducted Thursday at 7pm in a remote hilly area near Keruntali under Maheshkhali station.
During the operation, authorities recovered two homemade firearms, eight live rounds, four blank rounds, four live cartridges, six blank cartridges, one homemade weapon, and a large quantity of weapon-making equipment. Basinya, who was involved in firearm manufacturing, was also arrested at the scene.
The seized weapons, ammunition, and the accused have been handed over to Maheshkhali Police Station for legal action.
Lieutenant Commander Haque said the Coast Guard will continue such operations to maintain law and order in the coastal areas.
