At least thirteen people were injured on Tuesday as clashes erupted between BNP and Jamaat supporters at two separate locations in Chuadanga over the installation of billboards and electoral symbols.
The first incident took place around 5pm in Shyampur village of Alamdanga upazila under the Chuadanga-1 constituency, where a dispute broke out over the installation of Jamaat’s “scales” symbol.
Eyewitnesses said the confrontation quickly escalated, leaving at least eleven people injured, including a female union parishad member. Two motorcycles were also vandalised. The injured were taken to Alamdanga Upazila Health Complex and nearby clinics.
Among the injured BNP activists are Alamdanga municipality Jubo Dal joint convener Saiful Islam Konk, members Sajahan and Alim, Kumari Union BNP organising secretary Taijel Hossain, ward-1 female UP member Roksana Khatun, and her husband Rashidul Islam.
The injured Jamaat supporters include Murad Ali, Arif, Laltu, Oltu and Fatema Khatun.
Alamdanga upazila BNP general secretary Aminul Islam Rokon alleged that “under the guise of Jamaat, Jubo League activists carried out a planned attack,” claiming six BNP activists were receiving treatment.
In response, Alamdanga upazila Jamaat ameer Shafiul Alam Bakul said BNP activists attacked their homes after objecting to the installation of the symbol, triggering the clash.
Alamdanga Police Station officer-in-charge Masudur Rahman said police reached the scene and brought the situation under control, adding that additional forces were deployed in the area.
In a separate incident earlier in the day, tensions rose in Kamarpara village of Madhna-Parkrishnapur Union under Darshana Police Station in the Chuadanga-2 constituency after a dispute over installing a billboard.
The disagreement escalated into a clash at noon, leaving Jamaat supporter Khaza and BNP supporter Azizul Islam injured. Locals said both received initial treatment on the spot.
Darshana Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sultan Mahmud said no complaint had been filed yet, but legal action would be taken if one is submitted.
