HBO Max is developing an intriguing new true-crime series that blends the genre with the DC Universe. Over the past decade, true crime has surged across streaming platforms, with titles such as ‘The Vow’ and ‘The Staircase’, helping cement the format’s popularity.
Yet even the most crowded genres benefit from reinvention and DC’s latest project aims to do just that.
According to several reports, DC is bringing back Skyler Gisondo, who debuts as Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn’s ‘Superman’, to front a new series titled DC Crime.
Described by Variety as a “fictional true-crime series set in the DC Universe,” the show takes a markedly different path from Superman’s usual world of superpowered threats.
Season one will see Gisondo’s Olsen investigating Gorilla Grodd, a villain best known from ‘The Flash’. This approach could also pave the way for Gunn’s eventual recasting of The Flash.
Despite Grodd’s presence, the series is expected to stay relatively grounded, with neither David Corenswet’s Superman nor Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane slated to appear. Instead, viewers will see a line-up of returning Daily Planet journalists introduced in Superman.
The series comes from Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the creative minds behind Netflix’s American Vandal.
