Police have detained 34 leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliated bodies during a series of overnight operations across the capital.
According to a statement from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), members of the Detective Branch (DB) carried out multiple raids in different areas of Dhaka on Sunday night, leading to the arrests.
Police officials said the detainees were apprehended for their alleged roles in planning, funding, and taking part in flash processions organised by the party. However, authorities have not yet released the names or further details of those arrested.
In recent days, leaders and supporters of the Awami League and its associate organisations have staged brief processions in various parts of Dhaka and other districts, defying the ban.
The development comes after Awami League Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, who is currently in India, announced a “lockdown” programme to be observed nationwide on 13 November.
Police said the arrests are part of an ongoing crackdown on activities linked to the banned political group.
Earlier, the interim government 12 May banned all activities of the Awami League and its associated and affiliated organisations, on allegations of killings, genocide, crimes against humanity, and other grave offences during the July uprising.
Hours later, the Election Commission also suspended the party’s registration.
