A youth named Hasibul Islam, 26, was stabbed to death over a love affair at the Sangeet Residential Area of Aturar Depot in Chattogram’s Panchlaish.
Police arrested the main accused, Mohammad Zahedul Islam, 31, from Chandgaon’s Moulvipukur Par area early Tuesday, a day after the murder.
During the operation, police recovered the knife used in the attack and a pair of sandals belonging to the victim. Zahedul, a resident of Hamzarbagh, lived with his family in a house known locally as “Jahir Driver’s house.”
Police said Hasibul, who worked at a restaurant in the 2 No Gate area, met Khairun Nahar Priya Tanha, 24, on Facebook around five months ago. Their friendship soon turned into a romantic relationship, which enraged Tanha’s husband, Zahedul.
On Monday afternoon, Zahedul called Hasibul out of his home on the pretext of having tea. During an argument in front of Mannan’s house in the area, Zahedul stabbed him in the chest, back and neck.
Locals took the critically injured Hasibul to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following a case filed by the victim’s relative Md Imran Bin Islam, Panchlaish police launched an investigation.
A team led by Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Solaiman arrested Zahedul using technological tracking and local intelligence.
Based on his confession, police later recovered the murder weapon and other evidence from a nearby drain.
OC Solaiman said the accused admitted to the killing during interrogation and would be produced before court soon. Police confirmed that the incident stemmed entirely from a love affair, leaving the Sangeet Residential Area in shock.
