An army-led operation in the capital’s Mohammadpur area has uncovered a cache of locally made weapons and explosives, leading to the arrest of one suspect.
According to sources, the Sher-e-Bangla Army Camp’s intelligence wing received a tip-off on Sunday afternoon that a young man was preparing to manufacture crude bombs in the Tajmahal Road area. Acting on the information, a team raided the location around 5pm and detained a 22-year-old identified as Sajib, known to be the driver of top criminal “Buniya Sohel”. Several crude bombs and bomb-making materials were seized during the raid.
Based on Sajib’s confession, a follow-up operation was carried out later that night in the Geneva Camp area, where more crude and petrol bombs, along with bomb-making equipment, were recovered. However, several of Sajib’s accomplices had fled before the security team arrived.
Recovered items include 18 crude bombs, 23 petrol bombs,140 glass containers used for bomb-making, 250 grams of gunpowder, six packets of splinters, five kg of marble stones, three kg of broken stones, one sharp sword and one samurai sword.
An official from the Army’s 46 Independent Infantry Brigade said, “Several organised groups in Mohammadpur are involved in criminal activities. This successful joint operation by the army and law enforcement will help curb their operations to some extent. Further drives will be conducted based on the information extracted from the detainee.”
The arrested suspect and the recovered explosives and weapons have been handed over to Mohammadpur police station for further legal action.
