Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members will be deployed across the Sylhet division from 1 February to ensure the security of polling centres for the 13th parliamentary election.
Region Commander (Sarail Region) Colonel Mohammad Salahuddin shared this information during a press conference on Thursday. The press conference was about the maintenance of law and order, BGB’s role as a mobile and striking force, deployment plans, and security arrangements.
He said a total of 330 BGB platoons, comprising 6,600 personnel, will perform duties across 92 parliamentary constituencies in 17 districts through four sectors and 13 battalions under the Sarail Region Headquarters.
Specifically within the Sylhet division, a total of 2,100 BGB members will be stationed in 90 platoons across the Sylhet and Sreemangal sectors. Colonel Salahuddin noted that BGB will be active in all 92 constituencies within the region’s jurisdiction based on risk assessments, with two to four platoons deployed in each upazila.
To enhance monitoring in electoral areas, drone surveillance systems will be introduced to make surveillance more effective., Additionally, 654 newly added non-lethal weapons will be utilised if necessary to handle situations. BGB’s Quick Response Force, equipped with APCs, will remain prepared for any emergency.
Colonel mentioned that necessary training and preparations for using the 654 non-lethal weapons have been completed to increase the capacity to control the electoral environment. He said, “Every member assigned to election duty has already been given training and the necessary rehearsals have also been completed.”
