A group of 757 police sub-inspector and sergeant candidates, denied recruitment in 2007, have appealed to the Chief Adviser to confirm their jobs without further delay.

The demand was made at a press conference on Wednesday morning at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.

Mohammad Jahangir Alam read out a written statement on behalf of the “deprived” 536 sub-inspector candidates and 221 sergeant candidates, while SM Sujan Chowdhury, Shahedul Alam Dipu, Abdul Malek, Omar Faruk and more than a hundred other SI candidates were present.

Jahangir Alam, one of the “deprived” candidates, said that a high-level committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs had sent a summary to the Chief Adviser’s Office recommending reinstatement of the candidates with seniority, and waivers of age and training-period requirements. The summary was based on recommendations from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Public Administration, Police Headquarters and the Ministry of Law.

He said that although six months and 14 days had passed since the summary was submitted, no final decision had been made.

“We have been victims of discrimination for 18 years and are living in extreme hardship with our families while waiting for approval in a new Bangladesh free of discrimination,” he said.

“Some of us are now surviving by working as Pathao riders. Many have parents suffering from serious illnesses but cannot afford treatment. Over the past year, many have lost their private jobs while running from office to office seeking a solution,” he added.

The candidates urged the authorities concerned to immediately approve their reinstatement, including seniority and waivers of age and training-period requirements.
