Seven members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were injured and two of its motorcycles were set on fire after a mob attacked the force following the arrest of a fugitive accused in multiple cases in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf.

The incident occurred Wednesday evening at Nazirpara Football Ground in Teknaf Sadar Union during an iftar gathering, when members of RAB-15 detained Faridul Alam, 38, president of the local unit of Swechchhasebak Dal, according to law enforcement officials.

Faridul, a resident of Nazirpara in Teknaf Sadar Union, had long been absconding in several cases, officials said.

Two of the injured RAB personnel were sent to Cox’s Bazar District Hospital after suffering serious injuries, while the others received primary treatment at Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, said Teknaf Upazila Health Complex physician Debashish Sarkar.

RAB-15 Commanding Officer Lt Col Nayeamul Halim said the detainee was accused in ten cases and had been on the run in three murder cases.

“After the arrest, his associates created a mob and tried to snatch him away,” he said.

“They set fire to two RAB motorcycles during the attack before the force brought the situation under control,” he added.

Faridul has been handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station for further legal action, the RAB official said.

Teknaf Model Police Station Officer in Charge Md Saiful Islam said police and the Coast Guard visited the spot after receiving information about the incident.

“The motorcycles that were burned in the attack have been recovered,” he said.

The situation in the area is now under control, the officer added.
