At least six people were injured in two separate clashes between supporters of the BNP’s nominated candidate and a rebel candidate in the Sadar upazila of Narail.
The incidents took place at Bagdanga Bazar in Habkhali on Monday evening.
The injured have been identified as Syed Atiar Rahman, President of the Habkhali BNP Ward unit, Syed Mahin Ali, Syed Rentu Ali, Syed Khejir Ali, and Syed Ayub Ali – all supporters of rebel independent candidate Monirul Islam, who is contesting with the ‘Kolosh’ (pitcher) symbol after being expelled from BNP.
On the other side, Ashraful Sheikh, a supporter of BNP-nominated candidate Fariduzzaman Farhad, who is running with the ‘Sheaf of paddy’ symbol, was also injured.
Local sources said tensions flared between the two groups after the Maghrib prayers. At one stage, supporters of the ‘Kolosh’ candidate allegedly attacked Ashraful Sheikh with sharp weapons and beat him.
Following Isha prayer, another round of clashes broke out, during which supporters of the ‘Sheaf of paddy’ candidate reportedly attacked their rivals.
Police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. All the injured are currently receiving treatment at Narail Sadar Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Narail Sadar Police Station, Oli Mia, said, “Additional police have been deployed in the area, and the situation is now calm. We have not received any written complaint yet. Legal action will be taken once a complaint is lodged.”
