51 parties submit nomination papers, 8 quit race

Fifty-one political parties have submitted nomination papers to contest the 13th parliamentary election. Among them, BNP candidates have submitted 331 nomination forms – the highest number compared to rivals Jamaat-e-Islami and Jatiya Party (JaPa).

Jamaat candidates submitted 276 forms, while JaPa candidates filed 224. Meanwhile, a total of eight political parties, including allies of Awami League, are not participating in this election.

Election Commission (EC) Director of Public Relations Md Ruhul Amin Mollik provided this information on Tuesday.

According to EC data, among other parties, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) submitted 24, Jatiya Party (JP) 13, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) 65, Ganatantri Party 1, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) 7, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) 31, Zaker Party 7, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BaSaD) 41, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) 3, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan 11, Bangladesh Muslim League 14, National People’s Party (NPP) 23, Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh 5, Gono Forum 23, Gono Front 6, Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP) 1, Bangladesh Jatiya Party 5, Islamic Front Bangladesh 22, Bangladesh Kalyan Party 3, Islami Oikya Jote 3, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis 94, Islami Andolan Bangladesh 268, Bangladesh Islami Front 27, Jatiya Gonotantrik Party (JAGPA) 3, Biplobi Workers Party 7, Khelafat Majlis 68, Bangladesh Muslim League (BML) 7, Bangladesh Sangskritik Muktijote 20, Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) 9, Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) 8, Bangladesh Congress 18, Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh 42, Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Bangladesh Jasod) 9, Bangladesh Supreme Party (BSP) 21, Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) 53, Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) 104, Nagorik Oikko 11, Ganosamhati Andolon 18, Bangladesh Development Party 2, Bangladesh Minority Janata Party (BMJP) 9, Bangladesh Labour Party 19, Bangladesh Republican Party (BRP) 13, National Citizen Party (NCP) 44, Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) 30, Janatar Dal 23, Amjanatar Dal 17, Bangladesh Samadhikar Party 1, and Bangladesh Nezam-e-Islam Party 6 nomination forms.

Additionally, 478 people have submitted nomination papers as independent candidates. According to EC’s latest information, total number of nomination papers submitted is 2,569.

EC initially stated that the total number of forms submitted stood at 2,582. Later, it revised this figure.

Explaining the discrepancy, EC said that confusion arose because some candidates submitted nomination papers in more than one place – to both returning officers and assistant returning officers.

Currently, the number of political parties registered with EC is 59. Due to suspension of its registration, Awami League will not be able to participate in this election.
