Five members of a family were burned in a “gas leak explosion” at their home in Fatullah, Narayanganj on Sunday morning.
They were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital in critical condition.
The victims are vegetable vendor Kalam, 35, his wife Saima, their son Munna, 7, and daughters Kotha, 7, and Munni, 10. Saima works as a cook in a mess.
The blast occurred around 7am at a house in front of Gram Bangla Tower in the Giridara area of Fatullah.
Md Hasan, a neighbour who took the victims to hospital, said the explosion suddenly rocked the house in the morning. Hearing the sound, locals rushed in and found flames inside. The family was rescued and immediately taken to the burn institute, he added.
He suspected the accident occurred due to a gas leak.
Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon of the burn institute, said Kalam suffered burns on 95 percent of his body, his wife 60 percent, Munna 30 percent, Kotha 52 percent, and Munni 35 percent.
All five are in extremely critical condition and are being treated at the hospital, he confirmed.
