A Cox’s Bazar court has handed down death sentences to 5 individuals and life imprisonment to 4 others for the abduction and brutal murder of 2 minor brothers in 2016.

The verdict was delivered by Abdul Goni, judge of the Cox’s Bazar Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal (Court-2) on Tuesday.

Those sentenced to death are Mohammad Jahangir Alam, Abdul Shukkur, Alamgir Hossain alias Bulu, Mizanur Rahman, and Md Shahidullah. Each of them has also been fined Tk20,000.

The 4 others- Abdul Majid, Fatema Khatun, Rasheda, and Laila Begum- received life sentences.

According to prosecution, the convicts abducted 2 siblings- Mohammad Hasan Shakil, 10 and Mohammad Hossain Kajal, 8- sons of Mohammad Forkan from Garjania village under Ramu upazila in Cox’s Bazar on 17 January, 2016.

They demanded Tk 4 lakh as ransom from the children’s family. When the ransom was not paid, the abductors killed the boys and disposed of their bodies in a nearby canal.

Police recovered the bodies on 20 January, 3 days after the abduction. Following the incident, a case was lodged at Ramu Police Station.
