Five individuals were detained on Saturday during a mobile court drive against illegal sand extraction from the Kholpetua River in the Naobeki area of Shyamnagar Upazila, Satkhira.
The detainees are Nazrul Islam ,57, Sajib Sheikh ,22, Md Ibrahim Gazi ,25, Md Aktharul Gazi ,33, and Abdullah Al Mamun, 24, were caught red-handed. They are from Assasuni and Paikgasa upazilas.
The drive was led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Rashed Hossain, following a tip-off.
Under the Balumahal and Soil Management Act, Aktharul Gazi was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, while the other four were fined a total of Tk50,000 after confessing. Aktharul was sent to jail.
The magistrate said strict action against illegal sand extraction will continue to protect government resources and river navigability.
