Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam has informed the Jatiya Sangsad that there are 4,997,090 registered motorcycles in the country, according to the BRTA Information System.
The minister shared these statistics on Monday during the seventh day of the second and first budget session of the 13th National Parliament.
He was responding to a written query from Abul Kalam Azad Siddiqui, the Member of Parliament for the Tangail-7 constituency. The parliamentary session, which commenced at 3pm, was presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram.
In his written inquiry, MP Siddiqui sought clarification on the current number of legal motorcycles in the country and whether provisions would be made to legalise those currently operating illegally.
In response, Rabiul stated that regular operations are being conducted to halt the movement of illegal motorcycles on roads and highways.
He further clarified that if owners of unregistered motorcycles submit applications through the proper channels along with the necessary documentation, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) will take the required measures to provide legal status and issue registration numbers.
