Four brothers have allegedly killed a tenant by slitting his throat in Mymensingh city, in retaliation for what they claimed was an assault and humiliation of their mother.
The victim, 40-year-old Rajib Ahmed Rubel, also known as ‘Kailya Rubel’, was found dead in his rented room at Ramakrishna Mission Road on Sunday morning.
Following a swift investigation, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested the four brothers late on Sunday night in connection with the killing.
They were identified as Rahmat (30), Johnny (28), Rocky (26) and Imraj (18), sons of house owner Parul Akter of the Chhatrash Bari area under Ramakrishna Mission Road in the city.
PBI Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman said Rubel was locally known as a drug user and dealer and had cases filed against him under the narcotics law.
According to police, Rubel had rented a house from Parul Akter about a month ago. He allegedly used the premises for gatherings with friends and other anti-social activities, leading the landlady to ask him to vacate, which created enmity between them.
On Sunday morning, Rubel allegedly went to the landlady’s house, where he verbally abused, assaulted and sexually harassed her before returning to his room.
At the time, her son Johnny was present and informed his brothers about the incident, police said.
Enraged by the alleged humiliation of their mother, the four brothers entered Rubel’s room at around 10:00am and slit his throat, SP Mizanur Rahman told reporters at a press briefing on Monday afternoon.
He added that during initial interrogation, all four brothers confessed to the killing.
While the family alleged sexual assault, preliminary investigation did not find evidence of rape. The matter will be confirmed after medical examination, he said.
Police earlier recovered Rubel’s body from his rented room on Sunday morning. The PBI arrested the suspects within 24 hours of the incident.
