Three activists of Jamaat-e-Islami were injured in an alleged attack by supporters of the BNP at Jorpukuria Bazar in Gangni upazila of Meherpur-2 on Friday morning, police and eyewitnesses said.
The injured were identified as Ujjal Hossain, 30, his brother Masud, 45, and Jewel, 28. Ujjal was reportedly in critical condition and was taken to Kushtia Medical College Hospital, while the other two were admitted to Gangni Upazila Health Complex.
The victims claimed they were attacked while having tea at the market.
They alleged that BNP supporters, including Mohibul and his son Ripon, along with Belu and Saheb, assaulted them using locally-made weapons and sticks, accusing them of working for Jamaat.
Mahabub, head of the media cell of Gangni Upazila Jamaat, said the incident followed the election results in Meherpur-2, where Jamaat alliance candidate Nazmul Huda reportedly defeated BNP candidate Amzad Hossain by nearly 9,000 votes.
Mahabub added that BNP activists began threatening Jamaat supporters late at night, anticipating the formation of a new government. He described the Jorpukuria Bazar violence as a continuation of those threats.
Gangni Police Station Officer-in-Charge Uttam Kumar Das said law enforcement officers rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the incident and brought the situation under control.
He added that legal action would be taken if a formal complaint is filed.
