Police have arrested two former activists of an upazila unit of the anti-discrimination student movement over allegations of raping a woman in Magura.
Nafis Ahmed Swadhin, 22, and Sijan Mahmud Sani, 20, were arrested on Tuesday night. Both were former members of Magura’s Mohammadpur upazila unit.
Mohammad Ashrafulzzaman, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, confirmed the arrests. He said, they were arrested after the victim filed a rape case accusing four, including Swadhin and Sani.
After questioning, police produced them before the Magura District Judge’s Court on Wednesday afternoon, he added.
He also said that they are trying to nab the other accused — Md Rubel, 25, and Md Suman, 25.
The incident took place while the woman was returning from her workplace in Bororia village around 11:30pm on Monday, said OC Ashrafulzzaman.
The victim was later sent to Magura Sadar Hospital for a medical examination.
When asked, Mohammad Hossain, general secretary of the Magura district unit of the anti-discrimination student movement, said that in April 2025 a committee was formed for the Mohammadpur upazila unit.
Later, several members of the committee faced allegations of involvement in unethical activities. Consequently, the committee was dissolved within a few days, he said.
He also claimed that for the past eight months, no Mohammadpur upazila committee has been active there.
