China announced that its senior vice chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission (CMC) Zhang Youxia and another top official were arrested.
Before their arrests, the two were under investigation for suspected “serious violations of discipline,” a phrase widely used as a euphemism for corruption.
The move is the latest step in China President Xi Jinping’s decade-long campaign to root out corruption across the Communist Party and state.
In a statement, the Ministry of National Defense said, “Following a review, it has been decided to initiate an investigation into Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli.”
According to the ministry, Zhang is a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party’s Central Committee and serves as vice-chairman of the CMC. Liu is the chief of staff of the CMC Joint Staff Department.
